Coastal Fisheries Division
The Coastal Fisheries Division manages the marine fishery resources of Texas' four million acres of saltwater, including the bays and estuaries and out to nine nautical miles in the Gulf of Mexico. Coastal Fisheries management strategies are directed toward optimizing long-term utilization and sustaining fisheries populations at levels that are necessary to ensure replenishable stocks of commercially and recreationally important species. The Division also focuses on habitat conservation and restoration and leads the agency research, management and inter-agency coordination on all water-related issues, including assuring adequate in-stream flows for Texas' rivers and sufficient freshwater inflows for bays and estuaries. The Division also responds to Fish/Wildlife Kills and Spills and seeks restitution for loss of Fish/Wildlife and damage to habitat. The fishing activities conducted in Texas' 4 million acres of saltwater by about 15,000 commercial fishermen and estimated 1.6 million recreational fishermen have a minimum economic impact of $2 billion annually.
To carry out its responsibilities, the Coastal Fisheries Division has 10 field offices and staff located at the Austin Headquarters, all of which make purchases for the division. Purchases of capital equipment and large quantity type items such as gill nets or trawls are made by Regional Offices, the Science Team, the Marine Enhancement Program, and Austin HQ. If total cost is over $5,000, specifications are prepared by staff and submitted to the Austin Purchasing Section. Purchases required for maintenance of equipment are made by the field offices. Computers, vehicles and telecommunications equipment are purchased by Austin.
