Wildlife Division

The Wildlife Division helps fulfill the agency's mission to manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. This includes wildlife planning, research, species inventory and monitoring of population dynamics, regulation of game seasons and bag limits, conservation of non-game species, habitat inventories and monitoring, land acquisition of diverse habitats to benefit wildlife and the operations, maintenance and enhancement of 52 Wildlife Management Areas (WMA). Staff also provide expertise and guidance to private landowners on wildlife resources, wildlife restoration techniques and technical guidance on more than 13 million areas of private land; provide opportunities for public hunting and appreciate uses of wildlife; and provide general information, technical brochures and educational opportunities to the public.

Special tasks include collecting biological data from aerial surveys, spotlight counts, and roadside counts; conducting prescribed burns; establishing food plots; and improving wildlife habitat on WMAs. Research is conducted on a variety of species ranging from white-tailed deer to neotropical birds.

Purchasing duties and functions are carried out by field staff and Austin Headquarters staff. Our field administration consists of 4 Regional offices, 8 District offices, several field offices and wildlife management areas, as well as a number of employees that work out of their homes. Because administrative staff in the field is very limited, we ask that all vendors contact only our Austin office. At that point, we can refer you to the appropriate purchaser. Please feel free to contact our regional offices by mail at any time.
