Seagrass

I. DISCUSSION: The purpose of this briefing is to provide a progress report regarding implementation of the Seagrass Conservation Plan in the Redfish Bay area (Aransas, San Patricio and Nueces Counties). This complex is the first area targeted for conservation and restoration.

Staff gathered a citizen’s task force to provide direction in developing a seagrass management strategy for this system. The briefing will provide a status report of the activities of this task force including:

• Current status of seagrass research in this area
• Proposed seagrass protection areas
• Information concerning establishing a scientific research area
• Proposals for increasing fishing opportunities and diversity in this area
