Commission Agenda Item No. 21
Action
Land Donation – Van Zandt County
Purtis Creek State Park
November 2007

I. Executive Summary: This item concerns the donation of a 2-acre right-of-way (R.O.W.) from an adjacent landowner at Purtis Creek State Park.

II. Discussion: Purtis Creek State Park covers 1,533 acres and is accessed by FM 316 on the east side that is the main entrance and has an evacuation exit/entrance to the south along CR 2938. Other than handshake agreements, the park has no access from the north along FM 3080 or the west adjacent to CR 2816, as private property surrounds the park in those areas. An adjacent landowner who currently resides on a 15.44 acre tract that borders the west side of Purtis Creek State Park off of CR 2816 has given permission to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) over the years to access park property by driving through their property. This landowner has offered to deed the 2-acre R.O.W. to TPWD allowing TPWD permanent access. This 2-acre donation is necessary to maintain firebreaks and provide an emergency evacuation route once the park's multi-use trail system is operational.

III. Recommendation: The staff recommends the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopt the following motion:

"The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission authorizes the Executive Director to take all necessary steps to acquire by donation, 2 acres in Van Zandt, County as an addition to Purtis Creek State Park."
