Proposed Hunter Education Regulations

At the May meeting of the Parks and Wildlife Commission, the Commission authorized staff to publish proposed rules concerning hunter education. Under the Administrative Procedure Act, publication in the Texas Register is required in order to begin the official public comment period. The proposed changes would make the Hunter Education Course available through classroom instruction of not more than five hours in duration; a combination of online instruction and field exercise (field exercise of not less than four hours nor more than five hours); or online instruction only, for persons 16 years of age or older. Nothing in the rule prohibits a person from providing or receiving more hunter education instruction than is required. The proposal would also change the passing score for both on-line and classroom instruction to 75 percent. Currently, the passing score for classroom instruction is 70 percent and for on-line instruction is 80 percent. Staff is now preparing the formal document for submission to the Texas Register. When that document has been accepted for publication in the Texas Register, this link will automatically transfer you to a copy of the proposed rule as filed with the Texas Register and provide you with an opportunity to provide comment. In the meantime, if you wish to comment generally on the proposal, you may do so through education@tpwd.state.tx.us.
