Forensic Lab Intern

Responsibilities & Duties:
The intern will be working in the Law Enforcement wildlife forensic lab on projects involving population databases, primarily using genetics methodologies. The work will include DNA extraction, PCR, preparing gels, electrophoresing of DNA products in various gel media, gel photo documentation using imaging equipment, and using DNA analysis and population genetics software. Non-genetics work would include tissue sampling, lipid extraction, methylation to create fatty acid methyl esters, and operating a gas chromatograph with a FID, as well as method validation. The intern will observe lab safety procedures, practice good technique to minimize contamination of work product and areas, help maintain lab cleanliness and records, and execute their duties in a conscientious and professional manner.
Preference will be given to candidates who have completed at least one year of a master of science in Forensic Science degree program with a Forensic Genetics emphasis. The selected candidate will also complete a Confidentiality Agreement prior to beginning work duties in the lab.
This position is a paid part-time position (20 hrs/week) for 8 weeks (May 21, 2012 thru July 13, 2012) but intern can volunteer to work extra hours unpaid to fulfill their school program’s internship requirements.

Must meet program eligibility:
1) Minimum of 12 semester hours from an accredited college
2) Must be available to work the entire eight weeks of the internship period
3) Work schedule to be arranged between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
