Additionally…a park specific project for identifying, designing, developing and constructing specific “Points of Interest” markers be installed at select locations on the Nature Trails. These markers will be GPS marked and have corresponding locations indicated on a trail map. Currently, the trail system at Meridian is undergoing repair and upgrade and need to include these points of interest (POI’s) with informative and descriptive identifiers to include indigenous as-well-as protected/endangered flora and fauna (i.e. Mexican Buckeye, Scarlet Leather Flower, Golden Cheek Warbler, Ash Juniper, Shinnery Oak etc) to name a few. This will educate the public to increase their knowledge and awareness of our regions flora and fauna specific to Meridian State Park and relay that information to our park visitors thus enhancing and increasing the overall positive experience of our hiking trail system. If time allows…to accompany each POI, the intern will be assisted in the construction and installation of “rest benches” at selected POI locations along the trail to offer a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy these sites. Trail repair and upgrade is being accomplished through a federal grant program and should resume in FY13, the POI’s need to be developed and installed prior to their return.
