At the Tom Mays Unit of the park - Directions:
From Westside on I-10, take exit 6 & travel east towards Mountains for 3.8 miles, Park entrance will be on the left, but you’ll actually pass it, make a u-turn then enter on the right. From Eastside on Hwy 54, exit Transmountain Rd, travel west 7 miles over/thru the mountains, Park entrance will be on the right.
Mine Exploration/Sunset picnic – West Cottonwood Springs Mine (limit 15 ppl)
•Start: 5:00 p.m.
•Length: 1.5 miles hiking and 300 yds in mine / ½ hr in mine and 1 hr hiking
*Difficulty level: Easy to Moderate. Begin on West Cottonwood Springs trail, then enter the mine to explore the history and geology of the area and end on the Agave Loop. Rocky along some sections, with a few short steep stretches. The exploration into the mines is fun and easy with one initial short belly crawl through the opening. Optional: After hike, watch the sunset & picnic at Site 39. Bring food/snacks for the after hike picnic.
Water, snacks, flashlight/headlamp for mine tour, sturdy hiking shoes/boots, hiking stick, camera, and binoculars!
