Wild Cave Tour

Please call the park to make a reservation. Your cave tour may require crawling, sliding, and climbing through small spaces. Tour participants must be able to fit through an 18 inch opening. Please practice this at home to make sure you are able to attempt a similar crawlspace on the tour.

Tours will be held at 10:00am and 2:00pm.

Helmets will be provided. You will need to bring headlamp/flashlight and sturdy boots.

$35 per person. Ages 6+

Hike the Canyon

Join the Friends of Government Canyon and the Sierra Club for a jointly-led guided hike on one of the many trails at Government Canyon State Natural Area. Length of hike will range from 4 to 7 miles depending on the group. Open to ages 13 and over; minors must be accompanied by an adult; group size limited to the first 12 people; no pets please. Dress appropriately, sunscreen and hat recommended, wear sturdy footwear for hiking over rough terrain; bring two liters of water and a snack. Meet at the Visitors Center by the rainwater harvesting tower; 8:00 AM – Noon; subject to cancellation; Natural Area entrance fees apply. Summit Trail Hike

We will have a guided Summit Trail hike Saturday mornings during September. Come climb the rock and we’ll talk about the geology, cultural importance, and diverse ecosystem surrounding Enchanted Rock. Participants are encouraged to wear hiking boots, hats, and to bring water on this 1.2 mile hike. Terrain will be steep in some areas and the hike will be on the granite dome. Meet at the gazebo at 9:00 am.

Wildflower Walk

Come with us in search of Texas wildflowers and other native plants! Moderate intensity hike; must be able to walk over rocky, uneven ground. Open to ages 8 and up; minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Sturdy shoes, sun protection, and at least 1 liter of water per person strongly recommended. Sorry, no picking flowers allowed; photography welcome! No pets, please. Reservations required and will be accepted from noon March 15 until noon April 12, 2013. Sorry, no group reservations. Golden-cheeked Warbler Hike

Join Steve Hawkins, member of SA Audubon Bird Records Committee and Friends of Government Canyon Education Committee, on a hike to the Backcountry of Government Canyon SNA to see this species whose world-wide nesting grounds are found only in Texas. We will use the Joe Johnston Route as the core of the hike and may explore the Twin Oaks and/or Wildcat Canyon trails for Golden-cheeks depending on the interests and abilities of the group. Wear sturdy shoes, hat, sunscreen, and bring at least one liter of water per person. Group size limited; participants under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian; no pets please. Meet at the rainwater collection towers. Snipe Hunt

Early April is Snipe Season! Lockhart State Park is in need of Volunteer Snipe Hunters to meet at the end of the camping loop road on April 6th from 7:45 pm to 10:00 pm. Volunteer Snipe Hunters will help us search for and remove this new invasive species in Lockhart State Park. Please bring a flashlight but leave weapons at home! Regular entrance fees apply.

National Trails Day® Guided Bike Rides

Friends of Government Canyon State Natural Area will host guided bike rides in celebration of American Hiking Society’s 20th annual National Trails Day.® 8:00 AM-Noon. Guided bike rides (both easy and advanced) will be led by volunteers of the Natural Area. Two O'Clock Trail Walk

Join the Park Ranger Craig Hensley for a walk to enjoy the beauty of Honey Creek at Guadalupe River State Park. We’ll hike to “The Point” where Honey Creek flows into the Guadalupe River and then upstream. Along the way, you'll learn about the trees, critters and other natural occurrences found there, including a locally rare geologic occurrence. Be sure to bring water and wear sturdy hiking shoes and a hiking stick is also encouraged. We’ll meet at the Rust House inside Guadalupe River State Park. Night Watch

Join Park Ranger Craig Hensley at Guadalupe River State Park for a walk on the night side of the Bauer Unit. We’ll meet at the Park Headquarters at 7:30 p.m. and drive to the Unit’s entrance and then take a night hike along one of the area’s trails. Along the way, we’ll listen for the creatures of the night, look for glowing eyes and you’ll take your own personal walk in the dark.
