Duck Pond Nature Hike

Take a leisurely walk and learn about the plants and animals at the park. Discover how living things depend on each other to survive and thrive in the habitat here at the park. The trail is approximately one mile and is a great hike for families with children. Each hike is limited to 25 people. Call 972-291-5940 to check availability. This program is subject to the trail condition on the morning of the hike. Meet at the Duck Pond Trailhead.

Program is available to the general public. The Duck Pond Trail has steps and some rough trail. It is not wheelchair or stroller friendly. Cedar Hill State Park, 1570 W FM 1382, Cedar Hill, TX 75104.

Geocaching 101 - (DFW Area)

What is Geocaching? The simple answer is a scavenger/treasure hunt using GPS units and coordinates to find the treasure. Sound fun, well it is the fastest growing outdoor activity in the world. Want to learn more? We will teach you. No equipment or experience needed just bring your family or friends and learn about this great outdoor pastime. This program is limited to 10 families/small groups as the number of GPS units is limited. Please call Michelle, 972-291-5940, to check availability.

The Spooky Critter Hike

Come out to Ray Roberts Lake State Park at the Johnson Branch and join us for a very special night of family fun, candy, surprises and learning about critters of the night! Butter Churning Demonstration

Ever wondered how butter was made during pioneer times? During this program you can discover exactly that. Hear about the process of making butter along with some of the history and evolution of the butter making during the years of Penn Farm. You can even try your hand at churning and molding the butter. Meet in the yard of the 1876 house on the Penn Farm grounds.

Go Fish! Learn-to-Fish Event

Butter Churning with Lucinda

Step onto the porch of the Penn Family home and back into time to meet Lucinda Penn. Watch and listen as Lucinda churns butter the old fashioned way and tells stories of her family. Hear about the process of making butter from someone who has made many pounds of this favorite dairy product. Lucinda will even let you try your hand at churning butter.

Meet in the yard of the 1876 house on the Penn Farm grounds. Allow time to walk from parking lot to the house.

Geocaching 101

Geocaching is a type of treasure hunt using a GPS unit to help find hidden “caches” placed by people all over the world. Geocaches are everywhere from just down the street to the most remote wilderness areas. This program will teach the basics of using a GPS for geocaching and how to get started Begins at 11 a.m. at the park pavilion. The program will start with a brief presentation, and then the search will begin. A limited number of GPS units are available for visitors. Visitors may also use their smartphone to geocache.

Photography Contest

The photographs that have been submitted in December will be judged by the public in the Mack Dick Group Pavilion Jan. 12, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Jan. 13, 1-4 p.m. Everyone is invited to come view the photographs and select the favorites. Winners will be notified no later than Jan. 19.
