Meet at Tom Mays Unit – West Cottonwood Springs Trailhead
Start: 7:00 a.m.
Length: 4 – 6 hours
Trail Difficulty: Strenuous/Difficult. Begin with a gradual incline over scree, or rubble, proving to be challenging for some; then transition to a steady climb over loose rubble/rocks. Continue to meander across the ridgeline to the highest peak in the park, North Franklin Peak! Bring your camera, the views are unbelievable with a 360 perspective of our region –with views of Mexico, the City of El Paso, and into New Mexico.
Bring: Water, snacks, sturdy hiking shoes/boots, flashlight/headlamp for darkness in the morning, hiking stick, camera, binoculars, a map and dogs are welcome on leashes!
Directions to Tom Mays Unit: From Westside on I-10, take exit 6 & travel east towards mountains for 3.8 miles, Park entrance will be on the left. From Eastside on Hwy 54, exit Transmountain Rd, travel west 7-7.5 miles over/thru the mountains, Park entrance will be on the right. Due to the construction along hwy 375, the park no longer has any sign for the park entrance. A good point of reference or marker to assist you is the truck runaway ramp on the right side of the hwy as you travel West; as soon as you notice the ramp, begin looking for the slow down lane to turn right. Please use extra caution as you will need to slow down quickly and the slowdown lane is short.
