Turkey Trail Trilogy – Lower Sunset, Aztec Caves and Upper Sunset ($5.00 – entrance fee)

Meet at Tom Mays Unit

Start Times:

•Lower Sunset @ 8:00 a.m.

•Aztec Caves @ 11:00 a.m.

•Upper Sunset @ 2:30 p.m.

Lower Sunset

Length:  2.5 miles/1.5 to 2 hours

Trail Difficulty:  Steep decent at the beginning, becoming level for a good distance of about a mile down an old jeep road; then take the lower sunset trail to the left, with short steep ascents, and fabulous views along the edges of the arroyos and off to the west.  Finish with a short, steep climb back to Site 39.

Aztec Caves

Length:  1.4 miles / 1 - 2 hours

Trail Difficulty:  Moderate.  The trail is well maintained for most of the hike, with a steep incline with loose rubble just ahead of the entrance to the cave, so we will take this section slowly and carefully. There are benches for resting at several scenic overlooks along the trail.

Upper Sunset (plan to carpool within Tom Mays Unit)

Length:  2 miles / 1.5 – 2 hrs

Trail Difficulty:  Easy to moderate.  We’ll encounter some elevation gains, with some short steep inclines/declines, a few rocky/rough sections, and great vistas as we walk along the ridgeline.

Bring:  Water, snacks, sturdy hiking shoes/boots, hiking stick, camera, binoculars, a map and dogs are welcome on leashes!

To the Tom Mays Unit of the park - Directions:

From Westside on I-10, take exit 6 & travel east towards mountains for 3.8 miles, Park entrance will be on the left.  From Eastside on Hwy 54, exit Transmountain Rd, travel west 7-7.5 miles over/thru the mountains, Park entrance will be on the right.  Due to the construction along hwy 375, the park no longer has any sign for the park entrance.  A good point of reference or marker to assist you is the truck runaway ramp on the right side of the hwy as you travel West; as soon as you notice the ramp, begin looking for the slow down lane to turn right.  Please use extra caution as you will need to slow down quickly and the slowdown lane is short.
