Registration begins at 9 a.m. Event participants begin fishing at 10 a.m., and the tournament concludes at 11 a.m. Hot dogs and drinks will be served and prizes awarded between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. During the tournament, participants will be divided into three age brackets: 4 – 6 years old, 7 – 9 years old and 10 – 12 years old. The park provides fishing rods, tackle and bait for children.
During the tournament, participants bring any fish caught to an event official, who will measure the fish’s length and record this under the child’s name. The lengths of the fish caught are cumulative. At the end of the event, the children in each age bracket who have the top three cumulative measurements will each be awarded a prize.
The Youth Fishing Tournament is a component of one of the four Go Fish! events at Lake Whitney State Park in 2014. Go Fish! is a family learn-to-fish program where participants will learn the basics of fishing taught by certified Angler Education instructors.
The program is free for any participant who has a valid entrance permit for the day. Entrance permits are available from Park Headquarters for $5.00 per person for everyone 13 or older. Children 12 or under are free. Entrance fees are also covered by a valid Texas State Parks Pass.
Bring drinking water and folding chairs. Families with children are encouraged to attend.
