Cover-Freddie the Fish

Plastic Bottles

The more plastic bottles you recycle, the less of them will end up in the water!

Did you know that all pollution is caused by humans? Yep. But, since all pollution is caused by humans, you've got it in your power to help stop pollution. "But, I'm just a kid!" you say. Bah!!! That’s no excuse because kids have plenty of power! Here's a list of ways you can help prevent water pollution:

  1. Don't litter!
  2. Don't use plastic bags if you have another choice.
  3. Pick up every single piece of plastic you find before it gets into the water.
  4. Move sprinklers so they're watering the lawn or dirt - not sidewalks and driveways.
  5. Never dump anything down storm drains.
  6. Sweep driveways and sidewalks instead of using a hose to wash them off.
  7. Properly dispose of pet poo-poo.
  8. Tell your friends, family, and neighbors what you know about water pollution.
  9. Recycle soda cans, plastic bottles, and plastic bags.

Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB)

When microscopic plants called "algae" grow like crazy and gorge on more than their fair share of oxygen, we call it a harmful algal bloom (HAB). They also release toxins (poison) into the water that make fish sick.

Yiker dikers! For a fish, life in the water seems as dangerous as swimming with sharks. But wait! Sharks don’t live in lakes, rivers, or streams!
