Whooping crane stopovers

Submitted by Milton Griffith

From the early 1950s through the '70s,  whooping cranes stopped each year for feeding binges around the latter part of September and early October on the family land in Leon County. We were located just below the Normangee City Lake (formerly  a state park) and the area the birds liked was a marshy slough with areas of shallow open water surrounded by brush. (On a map look for "Running Creek" and the fork just below Normangee Lake spillway.)

My father pointed them out to me and explained what they were and also said never to tell anyone
about them or the "government " would take over this area from us and allow no one to enter it. Far as I know they still visit as I have seen them circling in the air since we sold the land in 1974.
