Fisheries Programs and Promotions
Fisheries management of Texas public waters is conducted by the Inland Fisheries Division and the Coastal Fisheries Division with assistance from other sections of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. In addition to routine monitoring of populations, stocking, developing regulations for consideration and habitat conservation; specialized or seasonal programs that further the goals of management are also established. These may be year round like the Family Fishing Celebration (also known as "free fishing in state parks") or Fish Records (also called the Angler Recognition Program) or actively managed on a seasonal basis like ShareLunker or Coastal Fisheries Bay Team. They may be authorized in statute as is the Artificial Reef Program.
We also have federal programs that are part of the Sport Fish Restoration initiative -- supported by anglers and sports enthusiasts through excise taxes on sporting goods and equipment. These programs are a big part of much of the restoration and conservation work we are able to accomplish and another example of the financial commitment sportsmen and sportswomen contribute to support natural resources in Texas.
Current programs are listed on this page and may change as new programs are developed or old ones fade away.
