Good bank access is available at Auditorium Shores and Festival Beach Park. Red Bud Island is currently closed to public access, but should eventually re-open. The Austin hike and bike trail circles almost the entire lower two thirds of the reservoir offering access to the bank. Unimproved boat ramps are located at Festival Beach, behind the Holiday Inn Hotel west of I-35, and under the I-35 bridge. One additional ramp, suitable only for canoes or small cartop boats, is located across Stephen F. Austin Street from Austin High School
