Hunting Permitted

Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) have rules and regulations for hunting not required on private property. Hunters must possess a valid hunting license, the appropriate tags and stamps, as well as the proper public hunting permit. Permits include: Annual Public Hunting Permit (APH), computer drawn Special Permits, and the Regular Permit, which allows daily small game hunting on some areas. Hunters 16 years of age and younger are not required to have a hunting permit, but must have a hunting license and be supervised by a licensed, permitted adult, 18 years of age or older. Hunters and non-hunters must wear hunter orange during daylight hours at any time when firearm hunting for any species is authorized on the unit (except turkeys, waterfowl, and dove). For more details see the rules page for this WMA, the Summary of Fishing and Hunting Regulations and Public Hunting Lands Information and Maps.

The Anacua Unit of the Las Palomas WMA is primarily a white-winged dove hunting area. Refer to the unit map at the check in station for specific site rules. The unit is open to hunters for scouting out movement of the birds and weather conditions to plan their hunt.

Shooting hours are from noon to sunset during the special white-winged dove season which is usually the first two weekends in September.

Other legal game for hunting includes mourning dove, chachalaca, quail, rabbits and hares. Check for open hunting season dates in the map booklet (link above) or Outdoor Annual. Rabbit and hare hunting dates run concurrent with hunt dates for dove and quail.

Special Regulations:

On-site registration is required for the Special Season White-winged Dove hunters. A Regular Permit (available at the Area) is required to participate in the Special Season White-winged Dove hunts. Hunters may purchase the $15 Regular Permit at check-in or the APH Permit may be used. The $15 Regular Permit fee is waived for persons possessing an APH Permit and for supervised minors.

Weapons Restrictions: Shotguns are the only firearms that may be used or possessed during hunts.
