Wildlife Viewing

Wildlife Viewing Permitted

Viewing wildlife is an enjoyable activity that is available in many of the Wildlife Management Areas of Texas.

Bird watching is a good all year long. During the summer you can see wood ducks, egrets, herons, dickcissels, scissor-tailed flycatchers, blue grosbeaks, indigo and painted buntings, and wood storks. Sedge wrens, white-crowned sparrows, white-throated sparrows, Lincoln's sparrow, waterfowl such as mallards, wood ducks, gadwalls, widgeons, pintails, green and blue winged teals, scaup and hooded mergansers are wintertime inhabitants. Prothonotary warblers nest on the area in the spring especially around Swede Johnson Lake. Other spring species include red-eyed vireos, yellow-throated vireos, northern parulas, Louisiana water-thrushes, Kentucky warblers, hooded warblers, Baltimore and orchard orioles and summer tanagers.

Toledo Bend Reservoir is one of many wildlife viewing sites along the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trails.
