Description

The Welder Flats WMA has 1480 acres of submerged coastal wetlands in the San Antonio Bay area located in Calhoun County. Welder Flats is owned by the General Land Office (GLO) and Parks and Wildlife manages the recreational resources and maintains the ecological integrity. The shoreline is private property but permission for use by Parks and Wildlife is permitted.

The San Antonio Bay shoreline is used by state fish hatcheries to stock the bay with red drum and spotted sea trout. This source of marine life and native grasses in shallow waters provide the environment desired for feeding numerous species of waterfowl, wading and shore birds that use the preserve, of which the most unique is the endangered whooping cranes.
