This large, sturdy looking bird is often described as tubular with a stationary tail. They are found in high, pine – oak forests and meadows and have nested in west Texas in brushy habitats. They have been recorded in every ecoregion of the state.
Identifying features (male):
- Short, straight black bill
- Red crown and gorget
- Black tail with gray edged feathers
- Dark head with pale eye ring
Identifying Features (Female):
- Short, straight black bill
- Grayish belly with green spots
- Broad tail
- Red central patch on gorget
- White over eye
