All current documented records for this bird in Texas have come from Brewster and Jeff Davis Counties. This is a species of open deciduous forest, oak and pine oak woodlands, canyon thickets and riparian forest. It is usually found between 3000 and 10000 feet in elevation.

This bird is a Texas Bird Records Committee review species. All occurrences should be reported to the committee with detailed documentation to enhance our knowledge of this bird in the state.

Identifying Features:

• Medium large dark hummingbird
• Turquoise to apple green breast and throat
• Cinnamon red wings
• Tail dark brown with purple violet sheen
• Gray belly
• Upper mandible black with lower mandible red orange
