Records of this bird east of the Pecos River are rare. This is a bird of moist mountain habitats, almost always found in a shady canyon with perennial water sources nearby. It prefers middle to higher elevations but may move to drier, lower elevations for foraging. Tends to move to drier areas in wet seasons and wet areas in the drier years.
Identifying Features:
- Large hummingbird - about 5.25 inches
- Long black tail with large white corners
- Short bill
- Gray-green back with rufous rump
- Prominent white eye stripe with less notable possibly buffy malar stripe
