Found mainly in association with agave plants, this small hummingbird with a relatively large head is associated with shrubby desert foothills, dry canyons and oak woodlands of the Chihuahuan desert region of Texas. It has been recorded in much of the western half of the state.
Identifying Features:
- Drab, gray green back
- Long curved bill
- Appears long necked
- Pale buffy breast band
- Short wings
- Forked tail folds to a narrow point
Identifying Features (Adult Male):
- Long, magenta gorget
Identifying Features (Adult Female):
- Dull rufous outer tail webs
