This large denizen of dry, pine oak woodlands, mixed conifer forest, and riparian forests is a mountain species associated with West Texas. It has also been recorded in south Texas. This large, slender bird tends to hover with its back straight.
Identifying Features (Male):
- All green back
- Very long bill
- All dark tail
- Black belly
- Often raises violet crest
- Appears blackish overall from front
Identifying Features (Female):
- Green spotted flanks
- Dark green upper tail coverts
- Dark green tail with small white tips
