Nongame and Rare Species Program: Rare Plant Communities of Texas
Edwards Plateau: Central Texas Granite Outcrop Woodland
Global Rank: G2G3
Description: These stunted woodlands (1-5 meters tall) occur on rocky slopes or flats surrounding granite outcrops in the Llano Uplift of Central Texas; similar sites are found in the Wichita and Quartz Mountains of Oklahoma. These communities are commonly embedded in a matrix of similar savannas or woodlands dominated by scattered Quercus stellata, Q. marilandica, and Carya texana with Schizachyrium scoparium, Bouteloua curtipendula , and other grasses. Overgrazing favors invasion by less desirable species such as Prosopis glandulosa and Opuntia spp.
