Nongame and Rare Species Program: Freshwater Mussels of Texas

Conservation Status of Texas Freshwater Mussels

Texas is home to just under 50 extant freshwater mussel species. The conservation status of these species vary from species that are quite rare and now candidates for federal listing to ones that are quite common. The table below details the status of each mussel species recorded from Texas in terms of their state and federal status, as well as their state rank. State ranks are designated by a number from one to five, preceded by a letter reflecting the appropriate geographic scale (S=State). Numbers have the following meaning: 1) Critically imperiled, 2) Imperiled, 3) Vulnerable, 4) Apparently secure, and 5) Secure. Other rank combinations have the following meanings: SH, species possibly extinct and known only from historical occurrences, SNA, species is not a suitable target for conservation activities, and SX, species is presumed to be extirpated from state. Bold state ranks denote a species tracked by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's Texas Natural Diversity Database (TXNDD).
