Technical Guidance

A Monarch Butterfly is only one type of colorful insect attracted by Wildscape planning.

Where do I start?

This is probably the most common question in developing a wildlife habitat. Fortunately, there are a number of great resources available to assist you in your planning, creating and enjoying of your wildlife habitat.

The appropriate flora and habitat will attract hummingbirds like this immature Roufous Hummingbird.

The most important ingredient in creating a Wildscape will be your plan. Without an organized plan, you are likely to find yourself simply adding materials with no idea how they will fit together.

Pink Dragonflies as well as songbirds, bats, and other wildlife can be attracted to your Wildscape.

Begin your plan by deciding what wildlife you want to attract. Are you hoping to attract hummingbirds, songbirds, butterflies, small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, bats, etc.? Of course, by creating habitat for one animal you often find others will use it, but if you have a goal in mind, it makes developing the habitat easier.

In all cases, a Wildscape should comply with local laws, landowner agreements and other covenants.
