Texas Symbols: Butterfly

Monarch Butterfly

This butterfly almost glows with its orange and black wings. The Monarch has adapted to help it survive -- it tastes bad! This defensive taste and coloring works so well that another butterfly, the Viceroy, adapted to similar coloring, fooling birds and other predators.

Named by the Legislature in 1995
