The Texas Tortoise

jackrabbit

The Jackrabbit is not a rabbit,
but a hare.

The Texas tortoise and the jackrabbit both live in the South Texas Plains. The jackrabbit is actually a hare and not a rabbit. Just as in the old Aesop fable of "The Tortoise and the Hare," we have the main characters living right here in Texas, but the setting is different! It's not ancient Greece, but a land of thick brush, shrubs, prickly pear, and the palms and citrus trees of the subtropical Rio Grande Valley!

Directions:

  1. Read the Aesop fable, "The Tortoise and the Hare."
  2. Rewrite the story with the Texas Tortoise and the Jackrabbit with the South Texas Plains setting.
  3. Illustrate your story.
  4. Make a play out of your story and perform for with your friends!

Think About It!

How does your story differ from the Aesop fable? Are there other animals who could star in this story?
