Get Out! Explore Texas Fun Stuff Wild Things

Information for Adults

Outdoor Kids is a self-paced program encouraging young people to experience firsthand the natural, cultural and recreational resources of Texas under the guidance of an adult leader–for instance, a Scout troop leader, a teacher, or a parent. The program is designed to be completed in three progressive steps, or Milestones, by participating in activities along three thematic trails: the Nature Trail, the History Trail, and the Recreation Trail.

The Nature Trail - Along this trail you will experience the natural world and learn about its wonders, mysteries and ecological diversity in Texas.

The History Trail - Travel this trail to see the rich history and diverse cultures of Texas come to life; and finally,

The Outdoors Trail - Have fun! Use your awareness, knowledge and skills responsibly to enjoy recreational opportunities in Texas.

The milestones are set along each trail so your child can gauge his or her progress. You decide if your young person has successfully reached a milestone.

Milestone 1 - Discover new outdoor adventures

Milestone 2 - Learn new outdoor knowledge and skills

Milestone 3 - Help the community

Try these trails yourself! Parents and adult leaders are the key to a successful Outdoor Kids adventure. You may find that introducing kids to the outdoors is as rewarding and refreshing for you as it is for them. Acknowledge your special child with an official Outdoor Kid certificate!

Milestone 1

This is the Discovery marker. To reach this milestone, the young person must participate in an activity and gain an awareness about some part of the "trail" he or she is on.

Milestone 2

This is the Learning marker. To reach this milestone, the young person must participate in an activity and develop knowledge and skills about the trail as a whole.
