This bird of the tropical lowlands is really a Mexican native that has ventured into Texas on a number of occasions. The occurrences in Texas are, thus far, limited to the South Texas Plains with no confirmed records north of the Nueces River. It is a bird of the open savannahs, tree-dotted pastures, orchards, and tall second growth. This is a large, colorful bird with a noticeably down curved bill.

This bird is a Texas Bird Records Committee review species. All occurrences should be reported to the committee with detailed documentation to enhance our knowledge of this bird in the state.
