Kills and Spills (Real Media)


Fish kill on Brays Bayou, a stream in Houston. A "fish kill" is a die-off of many fish that can indicate a drastic change in the environment, although many kills originate from natural causes such as weather and not from human activity.


Kills and Spills biologists keep careful records about fish and wildlife kills and pollution incidents they investigate.


The orange boom is used to help contain oil spills. Crude oil and sewage are two of the more common pollutants that spill into Texas waterways. The dark oil toward the top of the picture is being contained by the boom, so that most of the oil can be sucked up using a device like a large vacuum cleaner.
