Goliad – Zaragoza Birthplace State Historic Park
In 1961, Goliad County donated three acres of land immediately west of Presidio La Bahía to the State Parks Board for a site honoring General Ignacio Zaragoza. In the 1970s, after conducting archeological investigations and researching period architecture and construction methods, TPWD reconstructed the Zaragoza house. Today, the reconstructed house contains interpretive exhibits on the life of General Zaragoza, who is considered the father of Cinco de Mayo, an international holiday. Immediately southwest of the house is an amphitheater and plaza with a statue of Zaragoza, donated to the state of Texas by the Mexican state of Puebla.
Like Mission Rosario, this site is owned by TPWD and operated by the staff of Goliad SHP. The house and exhibits are open on request and for special events.
