In 1984, the diaries were discovered in a trunk that had belonged to Bud's
grandmother. Bud contacted Mr. Bill Coate when he was in Matagorda County
working on another project concerning a local man. Mr. Coate took the diaries
back to California with him and started authenticating them. Mr. Coate has
worked on these diaries for about 20 years. These members of the Stewart family
are accompanying the students on this journey.
