State Bison Herd Update

In 1999, as part of our "Challenge at Caprock" webcast, we introduced our webcast audience to the Texas State Bison Herd located at Caprock Canyon State Park. Here is the 2002 Update on the herd:
- Construction on a 29-acre public viewing pasture at the Texas State Bison Herd Breeding facility in Caprock Canyons State Park should be completed during the winter of 2002-2003.
- Results of a second DNA mapping project by researchers at Texas A&M have given TPWD personnel a very important tool for planning future breeding programs for TSBH. This is the most detailed DNA map of any bison herd in the United States.
- Funds from a grant received from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation are being used to fund teacher workshops, development of educational materials on bison and prairies, public viewing aids at the TSBH breeding facilities, and additional research on the history of the Goodnight bison herd.
