Texas Archeology – Historic Forts

Federal forts once stretched from north to south across the western Texas frontier, guarding settlements, stage-coach lines, and trade routes. Often all that remains above ground today, as at Fort Phantom Hill, are the sturdily built magazine and the ruins of chimneys. Military insignia, such as the pompon eagle, and brass buttons are typical artifacts.
