Deer Poaching Probe Leads To 247 Charges Against 20 People

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas game wardens this month concluded an investigation into an illegal deer hunting ring in Southeast Texas, filing 247 criminal charges against 20 offenders.

Carter Smith Named TPWD Executive Director

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Carter Smith was named executive director of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department on Dec. 5 at a special meeting of the TPW Commission in San Antonio.  Smith will be leaving the helm at The Nature Conservancy of Texas to take the top job at TPWD.

Holt Appoints Bass to Texas Deer Breeding Interim Committee

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission Chairman Peter Holt of San Antonio has appointed Chairman Emeritus Lee Bass of Fort Worth to an interim committee that will study deer breeding issues before the next session of the Texas Legislature.

Spanish Hunter Education Course Offered in Central Texas

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is offering a hunter education course in Spanish designed for hunters of all ages on Dec. 15-16 at Cabela’s in Buda. The course will not only benefit current hunters who speak Spanish, but for Spanish-speakers considering the activity for the first time, it’s a good way to learn more.

Chaparral WMA Adds More Public Quail Hunting Opportunity

AUSTIN, Texas — Due to improving resource conditions on the Chaparral Wildlife Management Area near Cotulla, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is providing 11 additional days of public quail hunting opportunity at the WMA.

Bryant Named Shikar-Safari Wildlife Officer of the Year

AUSTIN, Texas — Game Warden Jarrod E. Bryant of Marshall has been named “Texas Wildlife Officer of the Year” for 2007 by the wildlife conservation and hunting organization Shikar-Safari Club International.

AUSTIN, Texas — Tommy Bridgers has joined an elite group of sportsmen who can call themselves desert bighorn sheep hunters. That’s because the Duncanville, Texas resident is this year’s winner of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Big Time Texas Hunts Grand Slam.
