ATHENS—Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), the Tyler Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) and Suddenlink have teamed up to bring family-friendly fishing to Tyler.

Woldert Park Pond at 501 West 32nd Street is the newest location in TPWD’s Neighborhood Fishin’ Program (NFP), which stocks catchable-sized catfish every two weeks for most of the year and rainbow trout during the winter. The program is supported at the statewide level by the Toyota Texas Bass Classic and in Tyler by Suddenlink, the East Texas Woods and Waters Foundation and the City of Tyler.

Tyler PARD will host a family fun fishing day sponsored by Suddenlink at Woldert Park on Saturday, October 4, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. The event is free to the public, and no fishing license is required during the event. A limited supply of equipment and bait will be provided by TPWD, or you may bring your own. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

“The City of Tyler Parks and Recreation Department is very excited to bring together so many partners in our community to offer this program at one of our parks,” said Stephanie Rollings, Director of Parks and Recreation. “The Neighborhood Fishin’ Program allows exposure to the outdoors for children and their parents by teaching them how to fish. Without these wonderful sponsors and the assistance of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, our community would never have this type of outdoor opportunity.”

“TPWD applauds the efforts of the Tyler Parks and Recreation Department and Suddenlink to bring the Neighborhood Fishin’ Program to Tyler,” said Craig Bonds, TPWD’s Inland Fisheries Region 3 director. “The family fun fishing day provides a perfect opportunity to connect families with wholesome outdoor activities and highlight NFP’s long-term goal of providing quality year-around fishing opportunities close to home.”

Suddenlink, which employs nearly 1,400 people in Tyler, will present a $5,000 check in support of the program at the September 24th Tyler city council meeting. “Our employees are regularly involved in community activities, so we’re particularly pleased to sponsor Tyler’s first Neighborhood Fishin’ event,” said Suddenlink Director of Operations Tammy Young. “We look forward to seeing children from across the community learning to fish and enjoying the East Texas outdoors.”

“We are grateful for the public-private partnership that has united the Tyler community behind this program,” Bonds said. “Tyler’s Parks and Recreation Department’s leadership and commitment to the continuation of the program beyond the October 4 event are vital, and Suddenlink has brought a wealth of energy and financial backing not only for the event but also for the ongoing stocking program.”
