TPWD Hosts Workshop About Managing Land for Wildlife

HOUSTON — Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will host its annual "Managing Your Land for Wildlife" workshop on March 12 and it will be at the Tracy Gee Community Center, (3599 Westcenter), here in Houston. The event, while open to any landowners, is aimed at area residents who own or manage rural property outside of Houston.

The workshop begins at 9 a.m. and will include lectures about holistic resource management, doves, eastern turkeys, white-tailed deer, bats and integrated pest management.

"We’re trying to offer the technical guidance for people so that they can manage their land better, for whatever species their trying to manage," said Keith Crenshaw, an urban biologist at Sheldon Lake State Park and Environmental Learning Center.

Earl Chilton, Ph.D., of TPWD’s Inland Fisheries Division will host the final lecture of the day, focusing on aquatic vegetation management.

"There are a number of invasive weeds that grow in people’s ponds as well as in public water that are not native to North America, and as a result don’t have a lot of natural enemies and can get out of control," Chilton said.

Registration for the workshop is $20 per person. Pre-registration is required, and must be done by March 4. For more information, please call the TPWD Urban Wildlife office in Houston at (281) 456-7029.
