Gulf Spill Impacts Explored in December Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine

AUSTIN – Two in-depth articles in the December issue of Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine quote various experts about possible long-term impacts to marine life from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The articles showcase coral reefs and other Gulf of Mexico treasures not widely known that could be affected by the spill.

“For those of us deeply concerned about the natural world, there has been no greater drama in recent memory than what transpired with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill,” said Carter Smith, TPWD executive director, in his “At Issue” column for the December issue. “It is a drama that keeps unfolding and ensures that the Gulf States and citizens, particularly those with direct economic and personal ties, will remain riveted to the ramifications of the spill’s ultimate biological and economic aftermath.”

The first article, “The Pain of the Spill,” by freelance writer Melissa Gaskill of Austin, describes how “Gulf wildlife may feel the BP oil spill’s effects for years, even decades.” The second article, “The Forgotten Deep,” by freelancer Wendee Holtcamp of Houston, covers how “The Gulf’s little-seen deep-water ecosystems may bear the brunt of the BP oil spill’s damage.” The issue also looks at steps taken to address the situation, including the release of oiled pelicans in Texas.
