Online Hunter Education Course plus One-day Field Course
Online certification is designed for the adult hunter who has been shooting and/or hunting for a number of years or a youth that has an adult hunting/shooting mentor. It is not recommended for anyone under the age of 12, but options are a good study guide. Certification consists of two parts:
- Complete one of the approved online hunter education courses.
- Attend a One-day Field Course with a TPWD certified instructor.
The fee for the One-day Field Course is $15.00.

Participation in the One-day Field Course requires you to present your printed quiz results from the FREE TPWD or IHEA course, or the Field Day Qualifier Exam Certificate from OutdoorRoadmap.com, Hunter-ed.com, or from HunterCourse.com.
NOTE: No matter which option you choose, you must still attend and successfully complete the One-day Field Course testing ($15) to receive your final certification.
One-day Field Course
The mandatory One-Day Field Course includes a skills trail, live firing exercise, ethics presentation, review and final exam (80%). The field course is done in one day. You must pre-register for this course with the instructor.
When you arrive at the test site:
- Show your quiz results from the FREE TPWD or IHEA online course or the Field Day Qualifier Exam Certificate from any of the following: OutdoorRoadmap.com, Hunter-ed.com, or HUNTERCourse.com, to the instructor.
- Fill out a student registration form.
- Pay the $15 state fee to the instructor.
- Complete a hunter skills trail and a live firing exercise. (Honorably discharged or active military are exempt from live fire exercises only)
- Attend a presentation on ethics, responsibility and game laws.
- After all field and live fire exercises are completed, review material.
- Take the written exam and get at least 80% correct to pass.
- Upon successful completion, you will receive a temporary card. Your instructor will send in the originals for processing. You may legally hunt with a valid license and your temporary certification card. Your permanent card will be mailed within a short period of time.
