The Department’s primary commitment is to the people of Texas. The Texas Legislature has charged it with protecting the state’s fish and wildlife resources and to manage a system of parks, wildlife management areas and historic sites across the state for people to use and enjoy. The Department depends on hunters, anglers, boaters, campers and other visitors to state parks and historic sites for support and revenue. TPWD works with other governmental agencies, nonprofits, the private sector and private landowners to conserve important natural resources and to provide recreational access to their lands. The Department also reaches out to Texans who have not had opportunities to access the outdoors through numerous programs for youth, women, urbanites and other groups.
