Local parks are the “frontline” in the nationwide system of parks. Most communities do not have enough funds to acquire and develop parks to meet the demands of their expanding populations or their growing interest in land and water conservation. To assist in this work, the Texas Legislature funds the Texas Recreation and Parks Account that is administered by TPWD. The Department also receives federal funding, including Land and Water Conservation Funds from the National Park Service, that can be used to provide matching grants to help meet the need for local parks in Texas.
