History: Lake Arrowhead State Park consists of 524 acres in Clay County, fourteen miles southeast of Wichita Falls. The area was acquired in 1970 from the City of Wichita Falls under the State Parks Bond Program and was opened the same year.

Lake Arrowhead itself is a reservoir on the Little Wichita River and covers approximately 16,200 surface acres, with 106 miles of shoreline. Built primarily as a water supply by the City of Wichita Falls, the lake is also a major recreational site for the North Central Plains.

Activities: The park offers fishing and is a participant in the "Loan A Tackle Program" (the park lends out fishing tackle to it's visitors); lake swimming on unsupervised beach; water skiing; disc golf; picnicking; camping; nature study; hiking; horseback riding, boating.

Annual Events: Kids Fishing Contest and Adult Rough Fish Contest is held annually on the first Saturday in June.

Educational and Interpretive Programs: Hunter Education, Fishing Education Programs, Project Learning Tree, Project Wild, Aquatic Wild, Texas Rare and Wild, Adopt a Wet Land,and Buffalo Soldiers educational programs are available. Teachers can get continuing education credits for attending many of these programs. All educational programs must be scheduled through the park headquarters and require a minimum of 10 persons in order to conduct the training.

Area Attractions: Nearby points of interest include Ft. Richardson State Park, Historic Site & Lost Creek Reservoir State Trailway, Possum Kingdom State Park, and Copper Breaks State Park; the City of Wichita Falls, with its Spring Fling (April), Red River Rodeo (June), Hotter 'N Hell Hundred Bicycle Ride (August), Texas/Oklahoma Jr. Golf Tour (June), and Midwestern State University. Sheppard Air Force Base, and Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. River Bend Nature Works in Wichita Falls. Campsites & Other Facilities : Facilities include restrooms with and without showers; picnic sites with shade; campsites (with water nearby); campsites with water and electricity (50 amp); a group picnic pavilion in the equestrian area (capacity 125), a walk-in group primitive area (capacity 40) about 50 yards from parking at the edge of the road (one fire ring; .6 miles to the lake), the group dining hall has a full stove with oven, refrigerator, microwave, central heat and air, and restrooms (capacity 50), ; 18-hole disc (frisbee) golf course; 5 miles of trails; a trailer dump station; a concrete launching ramp; lighted fishing piers; fish-cleaning shelters - one at the boat ramp, and one at the fishing pier; a floating boat dock; and a day-use horseback riding area (300 acres with potable water and restrooms). There are 4 equestrian campsites with water, electricity (50 amp), a picnic table, a fire ring, a tie rail, a corral and 4 covered stalls.

Natural Features: The land surrounding the lake is generally semiarid, gently rolling prairie, much of which has been covered by mesquite in recent decades. Lake Arrowhead State Park is home to a Black-tailed Prairie Dog "town", Waterfowl and wading birds are common park visitors and residents. Popular fish include crappie, perch, catfish, and bass.

Directions:

From the Dallas/Fort Worth area on Hwy 287/82. Exit at Jolly, Texas. Travel south on FM 2393, go approximately 7 miles and turn left on FM 1954 for approximately 3 miles to the entrance of the park on the left.
From Amarillo/Hwy 287 enter into Wichita Falls, and travel south on Hwy 281. Approximately 7 miles south of Wichita Falls, turn left on FM 1954 (8 miles to the park entrance).
