The drinking water at Possum Kingdom State Park is currently non-potable due to a high salt content. Visitors must bring their own water for consumption. Non-potable water is available at campsites, restrooms, & showers.

History: Possum Kingdom State Park, west of Mineral Wells in Palo Pinto County, is 1528.7 acres adjacent to Possum Kingdom Lake. Some of the rock facilities at the park were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the early 1940s. The area was acquired by deed from the Brazos River Authority in 1940 and was opened to the public in 1950.

Activities: Activities include camping, picnicking, lake swimming, fishing, hiking, biking, nature study, boating, and water skiing.

Area Attractions: Some nearby points of interest are Fort Griffin State Historic Site, Ft. Richardson State Park, Historic Site & Lost Creek Reservoir State Trailway; Lake Mineral Wells State Park, Lake Arrowhead State Park, and Lake Brownwood State Parks.

Facilities: This park has 6 cabins that accommodate 4 in each and 1 that accommodates 8; campsites with water and electricity (premium campsites are available); campsites with water; walk-in primitive campsites (50-100 yards, fire ring only); a trailer dump station; picnic tables; a fishing pier; restrooms with showers; a fish-cleaning facility; a concrete boat ramp with a courtesy dock; playgrounds; and 2 miles of hiking/nature trails. Store/Marina: The park has a privately operated store and marina. The store carries groceries, bait, tackle, miscellaneous camping supplies, firewood, and a large assortment of T-shirts, and souvenirs. The marina offers both motorized and non-motorized boat rental, covered slip rental, and a gas dock. Reservations are strongly recommended for motorized boat and slip rentals. Natural Features: This park is located in the rugged canyon country of the Palo Pinto Mountains and Brazos River Valley, and is adjacent to Lake Possum Kingdom, 20,000 acres of the clearest, bluest water in the southwest. Numerous white-tailed deer make their home in the park. The Possum Kingdom Longhorns are on sabbatical roaming the rolling plains and woodlands of San Angelo State park while their home range is being rested and restored for their return in a few years.

Schedule: 7 days a week year-round. Busy Season: March - October on weekends; June - August all week. Check the Calendar for events and access restrictions scheduled within the next 3 months.

Directions: Take US Highway 180 to Caddo, then go 17 miles north on Park Road 33.
