First Day Hikes

Abilene State Park will host a guided nature hike on the Elm Creek Nature Trail. Distance is about 1 mile, very easy hike, suitable for almost anyone. A ranger and some volunteers will point out interesting features, talk about the plants and animals, and answer questions along the way. Participants will want to bring sturdy shoes, drinking water and a hiking stick. Participants should meet at the park’s CCC refectory bldg.

National Tartan Day

In honor of National Tartan Day, Abilene State Park will host entertainment and activities that celebrate Scottish heritage. Come and learn how Scotts affected Texas History and be entertained by presentations, Scottish musicians and dancers.

5 K Fun Run & 1 Mile Walk

Abilene State Park will host a 5 kilometer fun run through the park and 1 mile walk. There is no better place in the area to get some exercise than under the shade of towering pecan trees in the park.

Guided Nature Hike

This monthly program consists of an easy hike though the park guided by a Park Ranger. Each month the hike will have a new theme and will cover unique terrain. The hikes will be the perfect opportunity to get some fresh air, exercise and learn about all the plants, animals, and people that make Elm Creek and Abilene State Park such a special place.

Abilene State Park Outdoor Dance

Many years ago the visitors of Abilene State Park danced to juke box music after the pool closed for the day. The Friends of Abilene State Park are resurrecting this tradition by hosting monthly dances at the CCC refectory building. Music will be provided and refreshments will be available for purchase from the Friends Group. Everyone is welcome.

Dance Under the Stars

Performance by the band Muddy Creek, on Saturday evening, May 26 at Abilene State Park. It will be from 7:30 PM until 10:00 PM at the CCC Pavilion area. Charge will be $5 per person 13 years and older. Children 12 and under free. There will be no charge for persons camping at the park but donations will be accepted. Friends of Abilene State Park will be selling concessions. Wonderful entertainment for the entire family with the best band in the Big Country!

National Trails Day Hike

Venus Transit Astronomy Party

The Big Country Astronomy Society will join Abilene State Park to host a viewing of the Venus Transit. During this afternoon astronomy event the planet Venus will pass between the Earth and Sun and will be visible using telescopes with solar filters. The Venus Transit will not be seen again for 150 years. This event will start in the afternoon and evolve into a star party as the sun sets.

Local Community Appreciation Day

Abilene State Park would like to show you our appreciation with free entrance into the park. One person in the vehicle must be able to present a valid ID in order for your entrance fees to be waived in to the park. Communities include: Jim Ned, Buffalo Gap, Tuscola, Lawn & Coronada's Camp.
