First Day Hikes

Join park staff naturalists on a guided bird walk through the park, where you can observe bird species such as Green Jays, Altamira Orioles, Great Kiskadees and Golden-fronted Woodpeckers. Or, even a chance to glimpse specialty birds such as Clay-colored Thrush, Gray Hawk, or Ringed Kingfisher. Hikers are encouraged to bring sturdy shoes, water, a hiking stick and binoculars for bird viewing. Meet at the park’s headquarters.

Scat and Tracks Hike

Join park naturalists for a search of tracks and scat on one of the parks walking trails. Learn where the best places are to look for tracks, how to identify tracks and scat, and estimate how old the tracks or scat may be. This hike will be part of the nation-wide National Trails Day. Program is open for all ages. No pre-registration is required. This program is free with paid admission to Bentsen State Park. Perseid Meteor Shower Party

See meteors shoot across the night sky and explore nature at night at Bentsen State Park’s 6th Annual Perseid Meteor Shower Party – featuring night hikes, owl prowls, live animals, and viewing areas. Visitors are encouraged to bring blankets and/or lawn chairs to view the night sky during this event.

First Day Hike at Bentsen – Birds at Bentsen Walk

This year’s First Day Hike at Bentsen will feature the park’s rich bird diversity. Participants will walk a total of 2.5 miles in search of some of the spectacular birds that call Bentsen their home. The group will visit several bird feeding stations and a bird blind. Bring comfortable shoes and a hat. No experience necessary to join this walk. Participants will meet at the park’s gift shop at 8:30am. Pets are allowed if they are on a leash. There are reservations required for this programs and this program is free with paid admission to Bentsen State Park. National Trails Day – Nature Walk with a Naturalist

Participants have the chance to see some of the park’s spectacular birds, learn about some of the park’s native plant life, and perhaps see one of the resident bobcats stroll across one of the trails. Participants will meet the park’s naturalist at the park store. Binoculars will be available. Mosquito spray and hat are recommended.
