First Day Hikes

Join us on a 3.1-mile hike on the Ancient Aquifer loop, for approx. 2 hours long. Minimum age for hikers is six. Participants will want to bring water, and wear sturdy closed-toe shoes, and layered clothing to accommodate the weather. Binoculars and a hiking stick are also recommended. Hikers meet at Rocksprings Visitor Center in downtown Rocksprings.

Easter Morning Birding Experience

The Easter Morning Birding Experience will begin at the Rocksprings Visitors Center on the Rocksprings town square (where all tours begin) and guests will ride the Batbus to Devils Sinkhole State Natural Area. On our last Easter Morning tour, guests saw five different kinds of warblers and a total of twenty-five different species. Since Spring seems to be coming early, the endangered golden-cheeked warbler and black-capped vireo might be around, too. The Easter Morning Birding Experience will begin at 6 A.M. and local hotels are offering discounts to participants when reservations are taken before April 1. Easter is April 8 this year. The Devils Sinkhole State Natural Area has two brand new birding blinds and terrific guides. Both experienced and novice birders are very welcome to this event. $10 per person, discount for novice birders (10 YOA minimum)

Run The Devil's Sinkhole 5K

Run the Devil's Sinkhole 5K” is planned for Saturday, April 21. Participants will meet at the Rocksprings Visitors Center by 9 A.M. To receive full gift packs, runners (and walkers) should make reservations by Saturday, April 14. The organizing committee is still finishing some details, but there will be many age categories in which to compete. The fee for adults is $15. For high schoolers it will be $10 and, for younger runners and walkers, $5. Fees collected from this event will be shared with other nonprofit groups. The Devil's Sinkhole National Natural Landmark is Texas's largest one-chamber cave and also its third deepest cave. It is the seasonal home of a bat colony estimated at nearly three million individuals.

Evening Bat Flights

Every Wednesday- Sunday. Peer down into the depths of Texas and observe up to 3 million bats emerge from the Devil’s Sinkhole. A short program will be given about the Devil’s Sinkhole and bats. Visitors are shuttled in a tour bus from Rocksprings Visitor Center, 101 N. Sweeten St., Rocksprings, TX 78880, to the site. Tours are offered Wednesdays through Sunday evenings from May through mid October. Call ahead for reservations and start times. Fees are: Adults $12.00, Seniors $10.00, Children 4 to 11 $6.00, Children under 4 are free. Call 830 683-BATS (2287)

Morning Birding and/or Walking Tour

Guides will conduct an interpretive combined nature walk and/or birding tour on one of several trails in the Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area. History, geology, plants, animals and birds of the area (including Black-capped Vireo and Golden-cheeked Warbler) will be discussed as well as the Devil’s Sinkhole itself. Please bring water, binoculars (optional for hikers), be in good physical condition and wear good walking shoes. Reservations are required. Fees are $10 per person. Children must be accompanied by an adult; minimum age is 10 years. No pets please. Brown bag lunch optional. Meet at Rocksprings Visitor Center, 101 N. Sweeten St., Rocksprings, TX 78880. Enjoy a five kilometer hike along the Ancient Aquifer Trail at the Devil's Sinkhole State Natural Area at Rocksprings, TX. The trail includes one steep ascent and the ground is otherwise gentle, but rocky. It is recommended that you wear sturdy shoes, be a minimum age of ten and bring along sunblock. The hike begins at the Rocksprings Visitors Center, 101 N. Sweeten St., on the Rocksprings Town Square at 9:00 a.m. on New Year's Day. Reservations can be made at (830) 683-2287 or via email at tours@devilssinkhole.org.

Run the Devil’s Sinkhole 5K

This is a hilly road race through the State Natural Area. Participants and spectators will meet at the Visitor Center in downtown Rocksprings, Texas at 7:00am and travel by bus or caravan to the starting line at the Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area. Register for the race by calling 830-683-2287.
