Join us August 11, 2012 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM for a ride around Anderson on our Concord Stagecoach as we present Stagecoach Days. Discover a place where modern interpreters bring to life the travelers and communications of 19th Century Texas. Where images of the Inn and Coach, often called the “Stage,” is yours to behold and experience. Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site is where inspiration lives beyond history books. By the early years of the twentieth century, the iron horse had largely replaced the stagecoach. Thus faded from the American scene one of the great episodes of the Old West--the radiant red Concord Stagecoach, laden with treasure, express, baggage, mail and passengers, driven by the most skillful and courageous reins men the world has ever produced.

What was it like to ride a Concord stagecoach in the late 1850’s? Time has suddenly turned backward to 1859 and you will board a stagecoach leaving Anderson for Houston. Bearded merchants, shopkeepers and tradesmen stroll about the newly formed Grimes county courthouse. What finally catches your eye is a large, magnificent Concord coach, her new paint glistening in the sunlight. Her wheels are a bright yellow. Hitched to the coach are six sleek chestnut bay horses or maybe two rugged but very strong mules. You board the coach. This Concord seats nine passengers. Two seats are on the ends, one facing fore, another aft, a third is in the center. Three can sit on each seat, allowing fifteen inches per person. “Rather a tight fit, especially if the traveler is large or a lady is wearing bustles,” you reflect. Six more could ride on top. Including freight, passengers and crew the coach has a capacity of four thousand pounds

On the second Saturday of each month, Fanthorp Inn comes alive with special “DAYS TO REMEMBER”. Cowboys and musicians entertain as visitors tour the Inn and learn about travel and communications at one of Texas’ most authentically restored stagecoach inns. Stepping onto the Fanthorp front porch is a passage into yesteryear as guides take visitors back to Texas in the 1850’s. It’s a unique event the whole family will remember and enjoy.
